A supernatural horror about a young woman who accepts a caretaking job from Craigslist, only to discover the position has consequences far greater—and more dangerous—than she ever could have imagined.
Suicide, suicidal ideation, violence towards animals.
EXCITING OPPORTUNITY: Caretaker urgently needed. Three days of work. Competitive pay. Serious applicants ONLY.
Macy Mullins can’t say why the job posting grabbed her attention—it had the pull of a fisherman’s lure, barbed hook and all—vaguely ominous. But after an endless string of failed job interviews, she’s not exactly in the position to be picky. She has rent to pay, groceries to buy, and a younger sister to provide for.
Besides, it’s only three days’ work…
Three days, cooped up in a stranger’s house, surrounded by Oregon Coast wilderness.
What starts as a peculiar side gig soon becomes a waking nightmare. An incomprehensible evil may dwell on this property—and Macy Mullins might just be the only thing standing between it, and the rest of humanity.

Don't just take our word for it...
“With THE CARETAKER, Marcus Kliewer proves he’s our new master of uncanny slippage. This book is as full of dread as the sound of footsteps rushing towards you in a dark woods.”
– Nat Cassidy, USA Today bestselling author of When the Wolf Comes Home and Mary
“The homes Marcus Kliewer haunts aren’t merely filled with phantoms, but cerebral spirits and broken-hearted ghosts. THE CARETAKER is quite possibly the ultimate “don’t go in there” novel, offering up an apocalyptic final girl for the ages. This is a breakneck book, filled with razor-wire tension, where the reader runs the risk of losing their mind with every flip of the page.”
– Clay McLeod Chapman, author of WAKE UP AND OPEN YOUR EYES
“Disturbing and propulsive, THE CARETAKER is a gem of visually inspired Gothic storytelling. Marcus Kliewer takes a familiar horror premise and makes it his own, drawing you into a lucid nightmare of a novel. Keep the light on!”
– Scott Carson, nationally bestselling author of DEPARTURE 37

The trail of muddy footprints led off the front stoop, tracked across the gravel driveway, and disappeared into the darkened woods. David Carnswel had no choice but to follow.
He didn’t want to, that much went without saying. He wanted to shut the door, lock the dead bolts, crawl back into bed with his wife of four decades, and doze off to sleep like he’d never heard those three hollow knocks to begin with. But what David wanted held no weight. David needed to follow those footprints—nothing less than the survival of humanity was at stake.
Careful not to make a sound, he stepped back into his foyer. He pulled on a pair of gum boots and an olive-green rain poncho. He wore nightclothes underneath—sweatpants and a short-sleeve tee—suboptimal attire for the weather. But he couldn’t risk rummaging around up in the bedroom for a change of clothes, it might wake his wife. And if Grace woke, she would start asking her questions:
What are you doing up so late?
Was somebody knocking at the door again?
And the one that really got under his skin: Are you sure you’re feeling okay?
Grace had long suspected David was losing it, that maybe he was in the not-so-early stages of dementia. David had suspected as much himself when the visions first struck. He’d been standing in line at Costco, shopping cart filled to the brim, when a vicious migraine thwacked into his skull like an axe into a cut of dry wood. He’d buckled over, gripping the cart for balance. A flood of nightmare imagery followed, so vivid he could almost hear it, see it playing out on the glossy concrete floors. Hallucinatory aberrations showing precisely what would happen if he failed to return home immediately. Imagery far worse than the darkest depictions of hell. He dry-heaved twice, abandoned his cart, and shoved his way through the crowds. Get home. Now.
